The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash is one of the giants of twentieth century American life. His story, though, is tangled up in myth and in dark patches. The documentary tries to bring the man out from behind the legend. Cash’s own testimony is used throughout. There is archive material that had only recently been found. His family and the people he worked with speak. The rise is in the story and so are the falls. His faith and his searching are given their own place. The film was made with the full cooperation of the Cash estate. That is why its access to the archive is so wide. The telling goes on without decoration. Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan are among those speaking. June Carter Cash appears in the footage. Johnny Cash and Robert Duvall appear in the ninety four minute documentary, an American production Thom Zimny finished in 2019.
