What Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band Is About
Thom Zimny's 2024 documentary follows Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the tour they undertook after a long gap. The camera enters the rehearsal room, the wings and the bus, and the building of the show is shown in detail. The subject is age. Springsteen and the members of the band are in their seventies; they talk about the friends they have lost and how much longer they can stand on a stage. The running order of the tour is built around that thought too. Zimny has worked with Springsteen for a long time, and that closeness gives the documentary both its access and its limit; the narrative keeps no critical distance. Concert footage takes up wide space. Who it's for: Springsteen listeners and those who like backstage music documentary. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical view; the documentary follows the band's own account.
