Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words

Nneka Onuorah's 2024 documentary covers Megan Thee Stallion's rise and what she went through in the course of it. Her beginnings in Houston, making music while continuing her university studies and becoming one of the most visible figures in the industry within a short time are followed chronologically. Two heavy periods sit at the centre: her mother's death, and the shooting she survived in 2020 and the legal process that followed. In that second section the film addresses directly how the incident was mocked in public and how hard it is for a Black woman to be believed as a victim. The narration rests largely on the artist's own statements. That makes the documentary single-voiced; there is no critical distance and no questions are asked about career decisions. Even so, the openness in the personal sections is notable. Who it's for: followers of contemporary hip hop and viewers who like musician portraits. Who it's not for: viewers who do not want to approach gun violence and grief; the documentary places both at its centre.
