Stormy Night

The place is Bucharest and the year 1876. A man named Dumitrache tells Chiriac, the man he trusts, to keep watch on his young wife Veta. He is certain she is seeing someone. What he does not know is that the someone is Chiriac himself. Over the course of one night the misunderstandings pile on top of each other. The film is adapted from the play of the same name by Ion Luca Caragiale and was the first screen adaptation of that writer’s comedies. It was shot during the war years, with Bucharest under blackout, so even the exteriors were built inside a small studio. Radu Beligan is in the cast of Jean Georgescu’s Romanian film, seventy minutes long, released in 1943.
