What Stranger on Horseback Is About
Jacques Tourneur's 1955 western is adapted from a story by Louis L'Amour. Joel McCrea plays a circuit judge riding from town to town, and when he sets out to try a murder suspect he finds himself facing the man's father, the most powerful cattle owner in the territory. How alone one man gets while trying to make the law work in a place the law never visits grows through the whole picture. It runs just sixty-six minutes, but its Ansco colour and Tourneur's standing interest in the search for order put it somewhere apart inside the genre. John McIntire, Kevin McCarthy and John Carradine are in the cast.
