What McLintock! Is About
A wealthy cattleman deals with the return of the wife who left him years earlier and has come back to ask for a divorce. It is a marriage comedy in western clothing, and the fights are slapstick rather than combat. John Wayne plays his familiar hard man while laughing at him, which is the best thing in it. Its treatment of the women is contested even for its period and the final scene is now widely found uncomfortable, so it is worth knowing in advance. The mud brawl is among the genre's most remembered set pieces.
