What Hellfighters Is About
Chance Buckman and his crew put out oil well fires all over the world; the work is lethal, the men are rough, and nobody at home can wait for them for long. The character comes from a real person, Red Adair, who made a profession of capping burning wells and advised on the film; years later, in his seventies, he led the team that put out the well fires in Kuwait. The fire sequences are genuinely impressive. But the marital business wedged between them stretches the film out, and it counts among John Wayne's weaker vehicles.
