What The Devil's Brigade Is About
At the start of the Second World War an American lieutenant colonel is given a strange assignment: to put disciplined Canadian commandos and American soldiers the army wanted rid of into the same unit. The two sides cannot stand each other, until an assault on a mountain position nobody else will take is handed to them. The force was real; this joint American and Canadian unit fought in Italy and is treated as a forerunner of modern special forces. Its nickname came from a German officer's diary. The first half is barracks comedy and the second a hard war film, and the two never quite fit.
