Bandolero!

Mace Bishop rides into town dressed as the hangman. His purpose is to take a gang leader off the gallows, specifically his own brother Dee. The escape works, the brothers head for the border, a sheriff and the woman the sheriff wants behind them and Mexican bandits ahead. The film is not interested in robbery. It is interested in two brothers who came back from the war as completely different men. Mace wants to buy a ranch, Dee never learned to do anything else, and the story keeps that gap open even while it forces both toward the same destination. Andrew V. McLaglen directed. James Stewart plays Mace, Dean Martin plays Dee, George Kennedy the sheriff and Raquel Welch the widow Maria. Part of it was shot at Brackettville on the set John Wayne built for his 1960 film The Alamo: the San Antonio de Bexar street was reworked into the town of Val Verde, and the hanging was filmed there. The rest was shot in Utah and Arizona. Who it is for: anyone who likes late classical westerns and Stewart in his sour older-man years. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a fast western. The middle stretch sags on the trail, and Welch's character never gets the space the script owes her.
