What Singham Is About
Bajirao Singham is a policeman in a small town where everyone knows him and nobody is afraid of him. Jaykant Shikre, the criminal turned politician who controls the region, has him transferred to Goa on purpose, assuming that will be the end of it. The film is that collision and nothing else. Rohit Shetty adapted it from the 2010 Tamil film Singam, and brought Prakash Raj across from the original to play the villain again. Ajay Devgn's stance in the lead sets the template that the following decade would repeat: the shouting, rule breaking officer who defends his honesty with force. This is the first film in the police universe Shetty spent years building out. Singham Returns followed, and Simmba and Sooryavanshi were later hooked into the same world. The flaws are unmissable. Physics is treated as optional, the woman in the story has almost no function, and police violence is celebrated without a single question asked of it. Who it is for: fans of loud Indian action cinema. Who it is not for: viewers wanting realism or restraint.
