What Summertime Is About
Jane Hudson, a secretary from Ohio, spends her savings on a summer in Venice. She goes about alone with her camera, answering to nobody, until she notices that in the evening everyone in the square has a table and she does not. In a café off San Marco she meets Renato, an antiques dealer who offers her the thing she has waited years for, with one complication: he has a wife. Lean films Venice as a place that magnifies loneliness. Hepburn really did go into the canal, and the eye infection stayed with her.
