What Suspect Is About
A public defender is assigned a homeless veteran who can neither hear nor speak, and while the case looks hopeless one of the jurors begins investigating on his own. That is where the tension comes from, since jurors are forbidden to do this and both of them know it. Peter Yates does not turn the courtroom into a showcase; his real subject is how thin the resources of the defence are. Cher plays it without a trace of stardom, tired and dishevelled. The resolution ties up rather too neatly.
