Sztos

Two friends look back on the years of the Polish People's Republic. After serving time in prison they went into illegal currency dealing; the gap between the state's fixed rate and the rate on the street was their living. When their partner cheats them they decide to take revenge. The preparation takes months, the plan is built down to the detail, and the job ends up nothing like what was planned. Olaf Lubaszenko's first film as a director became a well liked caper comedy in Polish cinema of the nineties. The telling is built as a story recounted in retrospect; the two men describe what happened in their own words, with relish and with exaggeration. Cezary Pazura and Jan Nowicki are in the leads, with Leon Niemczyk also in the cast. It gives the difficulty of the period not as a complaint but as a story about getting by on cunning.
