What Taipei Story Is About
Taipei in the mid-eighties; the city is changing fast and the people cannot. Lung is a former baseball player now in the fabric trade, still living by the old rules of loyalty: he covers his girlfriend's father's debts and bails out old friends. Chin works in an office, wants to build her own life, and can see that Lung is not taking her anywhere. America is on both their minds, but leaving is not an answer either. Yang tells the city through glass, empty apartments and night light. Lung is played by the director Hou Hsiao-hsien.
