What Dust in the Wind Is About
A-yuan and A-yun come from Jiufen, a small mining town. Both move to Taipei: he apprentices by day and goes to night school, she works at a tailor's. Everyone assumes they belong together, and so do they. Then military service and time get in between. Hou Hsiao-hsien directed; the screenplay came out of Wu Nien-jen's own youth. Li Tian-lu, who plays the grandfather, was a famous puppeteer, and Hou later filmed his life as well. It moves in long, fixed shots and underlines nothing, which is exactly why it hurts.
