Samuli Edelmann J Johanna Kurkela What Tale of a Lake Is About
The thousands of lakes Finland is known for are both the subject and the protagonist here. The camera moves from clear springs down into the basins of the great lakes and shows the life under the surface at a closeness most viewers will never have seen. The telling does not use the flat register of a nature documentary; it is built out of Finnish mythology, out of the old beliefs and lake legends, with Samuli Edelmann narrating and Johanna Kurkela voicing Ahitar, the spirit of the water. Eight separate camera teams began shooting in the autumn of 2012. The film stands as a companion to the same producers’ Tale of a Forest from that year.
