Teresa Venerdì

Pietro is a young paediatrician, deep in debt, and most of the debt comes from his girlfriend Loletta and her expensive tastes. For the money he takes a job as health inspector at an orphanage. There he meets Teresa, who is eighteen. Meanwhile he appears to have become engaged by mistake to Lilli, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, and matters get thoroughly tangled. This is one of the early films Vittorio De Sica both directed and starred in. The director who would become the best known name of neorealism was still making light comedies here; even so, the orphanage scenes hint at the concerns of his later work. Adriana Benetti plays Teresa. Anna Magnani appears in the cast, years before Rome, Open City.
