On a small island off Sicily a fishing family takes in an Ethiopian woman and her child rescued from a sinking boat. She gives birth in their house and their boat is impounded. The conflict at the centre of the film is a real one: the law of the sea requires you to rescue anyone in distress, while the law of the state makes helping an undocumented migrant a crime. Emanuele Crialese presents this not as a thesis but as an argument inside a family, the grandfather looking at the old rule and the son at the new penalty. It won a special jury prize at Venice.
