What Teza Is About
Haile Gerima's 2008 Ethiopian film follows Anberber, who returns home after studying medicine in Germany. The country he comes back to is not the country of his youth: under the Derg, which took power after Haile Selassie fell in 1974, science is harnessed to politics. Anberber wants to do something with his training and finds every road closed. Retreating to his village he finds no peace there either, caught between the army and the rebel groups. The film looks at the seventeen years between 1974 and 1991, at exile and at return. It won the Grand Jury Prize and the screenplay award at Venice.
