What Muriel's Wedding Is About
A woman in a small Australian town believes her life will only start once she marries. Her friends do not want her, her father tells her she is useless, and she listens to ABBA. The first half plays as comedy, and then, without changing register, the film opens what is underneath: the mother's situation, the father's systematic humiliation, and the woman sinking into her own lies. The narrative shows the wedding fantasy as an escape and makes her pay for it. P. J. Hogan wrote and directed. Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths lead.
