What Requiem Is About

Germany in the 1970s. Michaela has epilepsy, was raised in a devout Catholic family, and leaves home to start university. She comes off her medication; she begins hearing voices and avoiding religious objects. One priest treats the idea of possession as nonsense, while a younger one arranges an exorcism. This is not a horror film: nothing supernatural is shown, and what happens is left between illness, family pressure and belief. It comes from the Anneliese Michel case, the same case behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Sandra Hüller took the best actress prize in Berlin for it.
