What Distant Lights Is About
Several stories brushing against each other in the border town between Germany and Poland: Ukrainians trying to get across, the smugglers moving them, a mattress dealer on the edge of bankruptcy, a young woman working as an interpreter, a taxi driver, a child selling cigarettes. Nobody here is exactly a villain, and nobody can rescue anybody. Hans-Christian Schmid's 2003 film builds the divided town not around a single event but out of small desperations happening at the same time. One bank of the river is rich and the other is not, and the distance is a few hundred metres. It is among the coolest-headed German films about the border: it blames nobody and it excuses nobody.
