What The Assassination of Richard Nixon Is About
In the early seventies, Samuel Bicke, a furniture salesman, is losing on every front: his wife leaves him, he is pushed aside at work for refusing to lie, and he cannot get the loan for the small business he wants to start. He traces all of it to a single cause, and that cause is President Nixon. Niels Mueller drew on a real person, Samuel Byck, who attempted a hijacking in 1974. Sean Penn plays him without making him sympathetic and without pushing him away either. Its best perception is how the moments when the man is right interleave with the moments when he is losing his mind. The register is oppressive throughout, deliberately. Who it is for: viewers who like portraits of isolated men in the manner of seventies American cinema. Who it is not for: anyone wanting an easy watch, since the film never lets up.
