Peter Pan

P.J. Hogan casts an actual boy as Peter. Earlier live action versions gave the part to women: Mary Martin, Cathy Rigby, Mia Farrow. Jeremy Sumpter grew several inches during the shoot, and the production used staging tricks to keep Hook taller than him. Jason Isaacs plays both Mr Darling and Captain Hook, a doubling that goes back to the first staging of the play in 1904 and that this version uses: the father Wendy is escaping and the enemy she meets wear one face, and the fear of growing up attaches to one man. Wendy also gets a sword and fights in the battle on the pirate ship rather than waiting to be rescued. Everything was built in Australia, at the Village Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast, so Neverland is production design, not location. Shooting ran from September 2002 to May 2003. It opened on 25 December 2003, a week after the last Lord of the Rings picture, and took 48.5 million dollars in the United States and 122 million worldwide. A good fit if you want Wendy inside the action rather than narrating it, and are not thrown by how openly the film plays the romance between her and Peter. Not for a viewer expecting Hook to be scaled down for children, because Isaacs never softens him.
