Pippi in the South Seas

Word arrives that Pippi's sailor father has been taken by pirates, and Pippi sets off for the South Seas with Tommy and Annika in tow. The journey proceeds by plane, by ship and with a great deal of incompetence, and once they reach the island both the pirates and the islanders meet Pippi's strength for the first time. Olle Hellbom shot it inside Astrid Lindgren's world with the same cast and the same production line as the television series, and Inger Nilsson is Pippi again. It leans more on adventure than the others and leaves Sweden for another part of the world entirely. Some of the island scenes today carry an obvious problem in how children's cinema of the period drew other cultures. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies Swedish children's cinema and Pippi. Who it is not for: anyone unwilling to overlook the exotic clichés of the period.
