What The Brothers Lionheart Is About
A children's film, but this needs saying first: its subject is death and it softens none of it. Karl, who is nine, has tuberculosis and knows he is going to die. His older brother Jonathan comforts him with a promise that they will meet in Nangijala, beyond the stars. Then Jonathan dies in a fire, saving his brother; Karl follows him. When they meet in Nangijala the country is in the hands of the tyrant Tengil and the dragon Katla. From Astrid Lindgren's book; Olle Hellbom directed. The ending is as heavy as the opening, and it was argued about in Sweden for years.
