What The Dark Crystal Is About
Jim Henson and Frank Oz's 1982 film follows a young creature who must return a broken shard of the crystal. Three suns are about to align. The journey leads into a hostile castle. The film uses not one human actor; the narrative is built entirely from puppets and mechanical creatures. The designs come from an illustrator's drawings. Production took years. The tone is darker than a children's film would suggest. Who it's for: those who like invented fantasy worlds. Who it's not for: small children; the creatures and several scenes are frightening.
