Thankam

Saheed Arafath's 2023 Malayalam film follows two gold couriers from Thrissur. Muthu and Kannan have done the same work for years, running regular trips between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and one routine journey goes unexpectedly wrong. The film does not build a heist narrative. The real subject is trust: how much the partners know about each other, how much their families do not know, and how a loss opens up their relationships. As the investigation proceeds what emerges is not the crime but what people have not told each other. Biju Menon and Vineeth Sreenivasan lead. The narrative is calm and the locations realistic; the everyday workings of the gold trade are shown in detail. The pace is deliberately low. Who it's for: those who like Malayalam crime drama and character-driven thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; the film consists almost entirely of conversation and investigation.
