What Thanks for Nothing Is About
Stella Markert's 2025 German film follows four young women in an assisted living group. They have turned their backs on family, school and rules and built an order of their own. Their social worker rarely intervenes and it holds for a while. When the agreement among them breaks, the film changes tone; the narrative shows that solidarity also produces hierarchy and makes no one a rescuer. The cast are young and largely unknown. The tone is energetic and the close hard. Who it's for: viewers of German youth cinema and narratives about communities. Who it's not for: viewers for whom drug use and self-harm would be difficult.
