What That Night's Wife Is About
Yasujiro Ozu's 1930 silent film follows a man trying to find money to treat his sick daughter. He commits a robbery and returns home, but the detective on his trail comes to the same flat, and everyone spends the night there. The film takes place almost entirely in one location and begins as a crime picture before turning into a family drama. The detective's stance does not stay fixed; the hours spent at a sick child's bedside change his decision too. Unlike Ozu's later work, the influence of American crime cinema is plainly visible here: the posters on the walls, the camera angles and the nocturnal atmosphere all show it. One of the director's early silent works, and under sixty minutes. Who it's for: those who like early Ozu and Japanese silent cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the family films Ozu is known for; this one differs in genre and tone.
