What That Trip We Took with Dad Is About
Anca Miruna Lazarescu’s first feature draws on what her own father and family lived through. In Romania in 1968, in an ethnic German family from Arad, two brothers are opposites: Mihai informs for the secret police and Emil is an open dissident. When an operation for their ailing father’s eyes becomes possible in East Germany, the three set off, and the journey coincides exactly with the crushing of the Prague Spring. The film tells a large piece of history from inside a car, with comedy and fear occupying the same scene. The distance between the brothers stays a family matter rather than an ideological one, which is what makes it hold.
