The Road Within

Vincent has Tourette syndrome, and after his mother's funeral his father places him in a treatment centre. He shares a ward with Marie, who has an eating disorder, and Alex, who is afraid to touch any surface. The three take the centre's car and run; Vincent wants to scatter his mother's ashes in the sea. The subject is not illness but nobody treating them as adults. None of the three trusts their own body, yet each wants the right to decide for themselves; the film asks where that right begins. The form is a road movie passing through familiar stops: motel, coast, argument, reconciliation. It does not leave the template. It is a remake of the 2010 German film Vincent Wants to Sea. Compared with that, this version is softer; the weight of Tourette in daily life is reduced and the humour is brought forward. It also drew criticism for its portrayal of the syndrome. Robert Sheehan plays Vincent, Dev Patel plays Alex and Zoë Kravitz plays Marie, with Robert Patrick as the father. Gren Wells directs. Who it is for: viewers who like road movies and three-hander stories with young casts. Who it is not for: anyone after originality; the film follows both its template and its source.
