What The 4th Floor Is About
On the fourth floor of a hospital there is a group of teenagers being treated for cancer. They race their wheelchairs down the corridors, wind up the nurses and rebuild hospital life on their own terms, and when a new patient arrives they absorb him immediately. The name they have given themselves is Los Pelones, the bald ones. Antonio Mercero adapted a play Albert Espinosa wrote out of his own years in hospital; Espinosa had cancer at fourteen and lost a leg. The film neither asks for pity nor makes the illness lighter than it is. It simply shows the life that floor built for itself. It was nominated for best film at the 2004 Goyas.
