What Wait for Me in Heaven Is About
Paulino, who keeps a small shop in Madrid, is kidnapped by Franco’s men. The reason is simple: he looks exactly like the dictator, and from now on he is to stand in for him at official ceremonies. Because of his long, unexplained absence his wife decides he has been taken and killed and tries to reach him through seances. He surprises her one night by turning up at home in secret, and tells her that in public appearances he will touch his ear to show that it is him. The film gives the dictatorship not as a horror story but as an absurdity. Antonio Mercero’s hundred and six minute Spanish film was completed in 1988.
