What The Abduction Club Is About
A period comedy set in eighteenth century Ireland. Since the land passes to the eldest son, the younger ones are left with the priesthood or the army, and the film is about a group of young gentlemen looking for a way out of that. Their method is to abduct the daughters of wealthy families, marry them and so share in the fortune. The narrative frames this as a romantic adventure and presents the abducted women as willing accomplices. The joke of the film therefore rests on a coercion it has already named, which is uncomfortable from here. It is a light production of horse chases, duels and disguises. Sophia Myles, Matthew Rhys and Liam Cunningham are in the cast.
