What The Baby of Mâcon Is About
Peter Greenaway's most contested film, and it needs a warning up front. Seventeenth-century Tuscany; a church play is staged for a young aristocrat. In the play an ugly old woman gives birth to a beautiful boy. The child's older sister turns the situation into money at once, selling blessings from the baby, and finally claiming she bore him herself as a virgin. The Church will not allow it. The whole film is shot on a theatre stage with the audience visible, and the line between the play and the real collapses. The gang rape at the end is long, explicit and unbearable.
