What The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye Is About
Marie Losier's 2012 documentary is about the musician and performance artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and their wife Lady Jaye. The two undertook a project they called pandrogyny: they had surgery to resemble one another and tried to form a single identity. The documentary does not tell this as a medical story. Losier filmed over many years on sixteen millimetre, gathering footage at home, on stage and on the road; the editing is irregular and handmade. Lady Jaye's death creates a break in the middle of the film. Genesis carries the project on alone; the documentary gives this not as a narrative of mourning but as the continuation of the same idea. Who it's for: those who follow the history of experimental music and performance art. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an orderly biography; the film keeps no chronology and does not explain its subject.
