What The Beast and the Beauty Is About

Lee Kae-byeok's 2005 South Korean romantic comedy follows Hae-ju, who is blind, and Dong-geon, who is in love with her. Dong-geon carries a heavy insecurity about his own appearance and quietly treats her not seeing him as a relief. When an operation restores her sight, instead of telling her the truth he introduces himself as somebody else, and things come apart exactly as you would expect. The film says it is mocking the obsession with looks while harvesting a fair share of its jokes from that same obsession. The chemistry between Ryoo Seung-bum and Shin Min-a carries most of it. Faithful to the habits of the genre, sweet and unambitious.
