What The Best Two Years Is About
Two pairs of Mormon missionaries from America share a run-down flat in the Dutch city of Haarlem. The four could not be less alike: one is the district leader, one an ambitious young man in a hurry to be promoted, and one has gone entirely cold on the mission since a former companion went home and married his girlfriend. The fourth is a keen new arrival straight off the train whose Dutch is barely there, and he shifts everything. Scott S. Anderson adapted his own stage play and explains from the inside why a mission is called the best two years in Mormon usage. It is a small production made openly for a faith-based audience, and yet its humour and its characters are concrete enough to travel outside that circle.
