The Man from Earth

The screenplay is Jerome Bixby’s. Bixby wrote four Star Trek episodes, and one of them, Requiem for Methuselah, turned on a man more than six thousand years old who had also passed as Leonardo da Vinci and Brahms. He conceived this version in the early 1960s, only finished it on his deathbed in April 1998, and dictated the remainder to his son Emerson, who was among the producers when it was made in 2007. Richard Schenkman shot it for 200,000 dollars in eight days, after a week of rehearsal, in a single house at Agua Dulce in California. The structural decision that matters is the refusal to illustrate: none of the claimed fourteen thousand years is ever cut to, so every era exists only as spoken testimony. Its distribution became part of the story. Producer Eric D. Wilkinson publicly thanked file sharers in 2007. In 2018 the team uploaded the sequel Holocene to The Pirate Bay themselves; close to a million downloads produced about seven thousand donations, and Schenkman reversed course and called piracy an existential threat. A good fit if you accept that every challenge to the claim arrives as a colleague’s professional objection rather than as an event. Not for anyone waiting for the film to show any part of what is being described.
