What The Big Dig Is About
A man who has escaped from an institution takes up a drill and begins digging up the streets of Tel Aviv. Nobody stops him, because everyone assumes the work must have been authorised somewhere; the municipality, the ministry and the press each set about explaining the matter within their own logic. As the excavation grows it stops being one man’s oddity and becomes a picture of how bureaucracy runs itself. The film draws its comedy from there; the one being laughed at is not the man digging but the order that looks at him and produces an explanation. Bomba Tzur plays the lead in Ephraim Kishon’s ninety five minute Israeli film, completed in 1969.
