What Sallah Is About

Sallah Shabati, the head of a large family newly arrived in Israel from Yemen, looks for a way to make money and to move into better housing. But the country can barely provide for the people already there and is at the same time trying to settle hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab countries. Every attempt Sallah makes runs into the bureaucracy, into the calculations of the political parties, and into how the already settled look at him. The film gives this as comedy and makes fun of the newcomers and of the system receiving them at the same time. Chaim Topol plays the lead in Ephraim Kishon’s hundred and ten minute film, completed in 1964.
