What The Big Road Is About

Six young men from the city take work building a road of strategic value to the Chinese army. Not everyone sees the road the same way, and the film is finally less interested in the coming Japanese invasion than in how workers organise. Sun Yu made it for the Lianhua Film Company and built it around Li Lili, whose star was rising, with Jin Yan in the other lead. Finished in 1934, it opened on 1 January 1935. It starts as though it were a musical and then turns out to be a silent film carrying songs and occasional sound effects, and it is generally regarded as one of the most sophisticated Chinese silent films of its era.
