What The Birch Tree Is About
A beautiful but ailing young woman is married to a harsh man who does not care for her at all. Inside the house she becomes less and less visible, while he notices neither what he gives nor what he takes. Only after she dies does the man understand that he loved her, and that understanding is of no use to anyone. The film is set in a village and tells the silence inside a marriage without raising its voice, in long takes. It came to be counted among the most striking works of Croatian cinema in the sixties. Manca Kosir and Fabijan Sovagovic appear in Ante Babaja’s ninety two minute Yugoslav film, completed in 1967.
