Dil Dhadakne Do

A wealthy Delhi family takes its relatives and business circle on a Mediterranean cruise for a wedding anniversary. The parents have slept in separate rooms for years, the daughter's marriage is collapsing, the son does not want his father's company. Nobody says any of it, and for ten days the ship leaves nowhere to escape to. The film is not interested in family secrets. It is interested in keeping up appearances: these people are performing for the guests aboard, not for each other. What it returns to again and again is a father who thinks himself modern while never once considering handing the company to his daughter. The form is large: ship, ports, crowded dinner scenes and songs. The narrator is the family dog, voiced by Aamir Khan, and the device fixes the film's tone. Zoya Akhtar directed and wrote with Reema Kagti. Her interest from Luck by Chance and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara continues here: privileged people who never chose their own lives. Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh star. Who it is for: viewers who like long family dramas and Indian ensemble storytelling. Who it is not for: anyone who will find two hours forty minutes too much. The film carries many characters at once and the middle drags.
