What The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros Is About
The 2005 Filipino film by Auraeus Solito, the director later known as Kanakan-Balintagos, follows Maxi, twelve, living in the poor districts of Manila. The child feels himself to be a girl and his family makes no issue of it; but the family lives by petty crime, and the young man Maxi falls for is a policeman. What stands out is that the conflict is built not on sexual identity but on loyalty: Maxi is caught between his family and the law. Nathan Lopez's performance is natural and without artifice. Shot digitally on a very small budget, it was one of the works that opened international visibility for Philippine independent cinema. It won the Teddy award at Berlin. Who it's for: viewers interested in Philippine independent cinema and queer coming-of-age stories. Who it's not for: anyone wanting high production values, or uncomfortable with scenes placing a child at risk.
