What The Blue Light Is About
Shuichi is seventeen, a high school student living quietly with his mother and his stepsister. The stepfather who left years ago comes back one day without warning, starts drinking, and the house turns violent; when he begins to turn on the sister, Shuichi decides to handle it himself. It is adapted from Yusuke Kishi's 1999 novel. Yukio Ninagawa, known in Japan chiefly as a theatre director, keeps the film cool and close to procedural, and moves the audience back and forth between siding with the boy and being unsettled by him. Kazunari Ninomiya carries it, with Aya Matsuura opposite. It opened at home in March 2003 and screened at Cannes two months later.
