The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open

This 2019 film, co-directed by Elle-Maija Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn, is set in Vancouver. Aila meets a young woman crying barefoot in the rain on the street. Rosie has just escaped violence from her partner. Aila takes her home. The film is edited to read almost as a single take and takes place across one evening. That structure keeps the tension continuous; every silence and hesitation between the two women is relayed without a cut. The real subject is that helping is not simple. Aila is educated and financially secure, Rosie is not; goodwill does not remove that difference, and the film shows it plainly. Both are Indigenous women and the class distance between them does not close. Who it's for: those who like Canadian independent cinema and narratives by Indigenous women. Who it's not for: viewers who do not want to approach domestic violence; the film carries it from beginning to end.
