What The Bottom of the Sea Is About
Ezequiel, a psychology student, suspects his girlfriend is cheating and spends an entire night following the man he suspects. The longer he follows, the further he enters the man's life, and the stranger the thing he falls into becomes. The film is not interested in infidelity. It is interested in the head of the man doing the following: information arrives only as far as he sees it, which keeps the audience inside the paranoia he is building. That is also where the comedy comes from. The form runs along a single line through one night. Buenos Aires streets, taxis and doorways are the entire set. It is Damián Szifrón's first feature. He would later be known for the series Los Simuladores and for Wild Tales, which competed at Cannes, and the core of his storytelling is already visible: a small private obsession slipping out of control. Daniel Hendler, Dolores Fonzi and Gustavo Garzón star. Who it is for: viewers who like Argentine cinema, black comedy and films that run through a single night. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a thriller. Everything that looks dangerous here eventually resolves into a joke.
