What The Bribe of Heaven Is About
In a small, devout town the priest refuses to hold a funeral mass for someone who has taken their own life. When the townspeople object, he retaliates by withholding the sacraments from the whole town, on the condition that the family remove the body from the Catholic cemetery. What follows is a whole community digging in against its own priest, with neither side willing to give way. For the family left behind the question is not a ceremony but whether the town still counts them as its own. The film gives this as black comedy rather than tragedy, and from the same place it shows the hold the church has over everyday life. Lisandro Duque Naranjo’s ninety minute Colombian film was completed in 2016.
